Christ the King Church Choir
Christ the King Church Choir leads the singing during the 10 O’clock mass every Sunday and has been in service of Christ the King Parish, Kampala since 1936. The Director at the time of inception was Mr. S. Lobo who was assisted by Mr. Remy de Silva as Choirmaster. The choir comprised, at that time, mainly the Goan community (Indians) with only four Ugandan members. In 1961, a good number of choir members from the Goan community left the country leaving the four Ugandans to take up the task of re-building the Choir. Among those were the late Mr. Valerian Mayega who served as Music Director and Chief Organist until his death in 1991, and the late Mr. Aloysius Darlington Lubowa (commonly known as A. D. Lubowa), who retired from active Choir service in the 1990’s. (Mr. A.D. Lubowa passed on in December 2017). These two gentlemen made an immense contribution in recruiting the local Ugandans into the choir especially when the Goans completely left the country in the 1970’s.
The Choir has enjoyed steady growth in its membership, which for quite some time now has grown to about 60 active members. The membership is diverse with men and women from different walks of life who have offered their service and voices to God and the Church on purely voluntary basis. One of the remarkable points to note is that some of the members who joined in the 1970’s and 80’s are still actively serving. There are also a good number of those who joined in the 90’s and in the early 2000’s. As of December 2023, the longest serving members of the choir include Mrs. Betty Muliisa who joined in 1972, Mrs. Mildred Warugaba Ssentoogo and Mr. John Chrysostom Kigongo (JC) who both joined in 1975. Such members are a good example to the younger members and their continued service has helped to cement further the firm foundation started in 1936.
The major objective of the Choir is “to sing songs of praise in the Church and to lead the congregation into worship’’. It is gratifying to note that since its inception, the choir has been in attendance during the 10 O’clock Mass at Christ the King Church, every Sunday up to the present day.
The choir has continued to attract public admiration and appreciation for its services. One of the areas for the choir’s logistical sustainability has been through financial contributions received through the kind appreciation and support by friends, well-wishers, and all people of good will. These contributions and support have helped greatly in the everyday running of the choir.
The choir is led by a chairperson who serves a two-year term and is the overall chief administrator and accounting officer. Mr. Jimmy Avini is the music director. The choir’s Patron is the Parish Priest of Christ the King Parish.
